How to choose jighead weight and hook size for soft plastics

Choose jighead weight and hook size separately. Learn how current, lure shape and depth affect your rig, with gram conversions and practical troubleshooting.

Lark Hawk Jig Head - 7- 17 Gram

How do you choose a jighead? Match the hook to the soft plastic’s shape, then select enough head weight to control the lure at your intended depth. Weight and hook size are separate decisions. The right choice can change during a session as the current or wind changes.

A soft plastic that looks straight in the packet can become awkward once rigged. Perhaps the hook takes up too much of the body, or the head drags it down faster than you intended. Before changing the lure, check the two parts of the jighead choice.

Start with hook fit, not grams

Lay the jighead beside the plastic before threading it. Check the proposed exit point, the space between the body and hook point, and whether the working tail will remain free. Follow the plastic maker’s rigging guidance where available. A hook-size number alone cannot describe how it will fit every body shape.

Once rigged, the body should sit straight rather than bunching up or bending sideways. If it twists as you draw it through visible water, inspect the alignment before blaming the colour or retrieve. Tackle Tactics’ jighead overview explains the different head and hook arrangements available.

Then choose the weight for the presentation

More weight can help a lure reach depth or stay under control in moving water. Less weight can allow a slower fall. The aim is a useful presentation, not simply the lightest head you own. Tackle Tactics lists wind, current, depth and lure characteristics among the factors in its jighead-selection guide.

What to check when the rig is not behaving as expected
What you notice First check Possible adjustment
Lure sweeps away before reaching the intended area Current, slack and casting angle Try more weight if it fits the rod’s range
Head repeatedly wedges into the bottom Bottom type and length of the pause Retrieve earlier, reduce weight or change the route
Plastic spins or lies crooked Rigging alignment and hook fit Re-rig straight before changing weight
Tail movement seems restricted Hook length and exit position Compare a more suitable hook geometry

Why there is no universal grams-per-metre rule

A depth figure leaves out too much. Two places with the same depth can have very different flow; two plastics on the same head can offer different resistance. Even the job can differ: swimming above weed is not the same as deliberately contacting a clean bottom.

In an Indian backwater or tidal creek, note what the water is doing on arrival rather than repeating yesterday’s head weight automatically. If the current increases, reassess whether you can still control the rig. That is an adjustment to conditions, not evidence that the original lure stopped working.

Read a real product selector carefully

Our Lark Hawk jighead listing illustrates why both specifications matter: options include 4/0 at 10 g and 14 g, plus 5/0 at 14 g. You can change weight while keeping the labelled hook size, or change hook size while keeping weight. Check the selected option and actual fit before ordering.

Keep one locally suitable rig as your reference. Write down the head weight, hook size, plastic and conditions. Change one part and compare. This produces a more useful note than “the fishing was slow”.

Ounces to grams for comparing packets

Approximate jighead-weight conversions, not depth recommendations
Ounces Grams
1/16 oz 1.8 g
1/8 oz 3.5 g
1/4 oz 7.1 g
3/8 oz 10.6 g
1/2 oz 14.2 g

For the rod’s casting limit, consider the whole rig. A 7 g head plus a 5 g plastic is already about 12 g before any additional hardware. A pack labelled 7 g does not make that complete setup a 7 g casting load.

Common questions

Can I use a jighead with any soft lure?

No. Some lures are already weighted or rigged, and others need a particular hook style. Check the product before adding another head. This is especially useful when comparing ready-rigged shrimp lures with loose plastics.

Does a heavier head need a bigger hook?

Not necessarily. Look for the weight and hook combination that meets both needs, rather than using the weight as a shortcut for hook fit.

Should I always bounce along the bottom?

No. Choose the depth and retrieve for the presentation. Persistent snags are a reason to change the route or method, not to keep sacrificing rigs.

Compare our jigheads and soft lures, then use the retrieve practice plan to learn how your assembled rig behaves.
